Management and Leadership: 3 Myths About Management and Leadership
by Duncan Brodie

When working with clients either individually or on groups, there are often things that come up which are best described as myths. So what are the 3 most common myths that people come up with about management and leadership?

Myth 1: People are born managers and leaders

Now I don't know about you, but I have yet to hear about new parents being told in the delivery room that their new born has or does not have the management and leadership gene. Yet many people still ask the question whether some people are born managers and leaders. Without doubt some of the personal attributes that you have can make things a little easier. On the other hand, I believe that with the right guidance and support anyone can become a competent manager or leader.

Myth 2: You need to be [fill in the blank]

What do you make up about choosing to manage or lead? What are some of the blanks that you would add in?

It might be that you believe that you need to be:

• Willing to sacrifice your life for your work

• Charismatic and liked by everyone

• Highly creative and visionary

• A real tough nut who rules the roost with an iron fist

Next time you find yourself making up a whole host of assumptions about what you need to be, take a moment to distinguish between fact and fiction.

Myth 3: I will never be as good as

People often look at others who are the top of their profession, see how good they are at a lot of things and decide they will never be as good as them and may even give up.

If you are going to make comparisons, aim to make them valid. You would not compare a top flight soccer or football payer with someone who plays for fun on a Sunday morning, so why do it when it comes to management and leadership?

Bottom Line -- We all make up assumptions and have myths about management and leadership. The question is do you want to worry about the myths or focus on becoming a better manager or leader?
