Creating Products: Paper-Covered Picture Frames

by C.S. Clarke, Ph.D.

Editor's Note: When I write an article about a product you can make to sell, I provide information that helps you make just one at a time. I anticipate that if you are going to make serious money with a product, you may eventually want to learn to produce it in quantity. Therefore you will adapt the "craft" way that you begin with to a mass-production model. But, when you're starting out on a new product, the way you learn to produce it is to make a unit at a time from start to finish. When you get good at it, you can first sell it as a craft. Then, you can move on to designing better production methods.

Here's another specific suggestion in my series on creating and developing physical products that are known to sell both online and offline.

Picture frames are always in season and with more and more folks taking great shots with their digital cams, there's a constantly growing demand for them.

The good news about this for the solo-entrepreneur looking for a unique product to sell is that there are easy ways into the business. Without needing any heavy-duty crafting skills or hard work. All you need is some simple, inexpensive, pre-made frames, some decorative paper, some paint brushes and some glue and sealer (like ModPodge.)

You can easily find both used and new frames, often complete with glass and backing at garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets, KMart, Walmart, Sam's Club, Costco, or maybe even in your grandmother's attic. It doesn't matter how good they look. You are going to make them look decorator-quality.

You can take many different kinds of printed papers to cut, wrap, glue and seal onto the frame, transforming it from mundane to magical. I've seen everything from comic books to foil gift wrap used for this. You can even design and print your own papers from your computer and printer. Or have your paper designs printed on large sheets by your local Kinko's. (What's good about Kinko's is that you can get an account with FedEx/Kinko's and just send your images online to be printed and picked up later.)

Paper-covered frames are fast and easy. You can sell them on eBay, Amazon.com, etsy.com or your own storefront. Locally, they do well at craft fairs and flea markets and as consignments to gift shops.
