How to Feel Better -- Right Away
by C.S. Clarke, Ph.D.
Part 2 of 5

Laugh. Laughing provides a physical release that not only reduces mental tension and stress but also relaxes the muscles. (Haven't you noticed how difficult it is to stand up while laughing hard?) It fools the body/mind into a temporary sense of happiness, regardless of the immediate circumstances. Shared laughter breaks tensions between people and usually creates a feeling of a bond or impression of mutual understanding.

People who watch comedies believe they are having more fun than people who watch other genres of media. And remember that Dr. Norman Cousins relieved his pain from rheumatoid arthritis and its treatment by watching movies that made him laugh.
