They think about what they're having for dinner, they're doing self commentary on the reading ( Man, this is boring ), etc. Then, they combine that with some skills that they learned in kindergarten when they were first learning how to read, like thinking about the pronunciation of words, trying to define vocabulary words they don't know, and so on. If you just read, and think about that, then you can take in so much more information. Great article by the way.
