Book Review: Parent Effectiveness Training by Thomas Gordon
(Review by C.S. Clarke, Ph.D.)
Although this is an excellent book on parenting, that is not the only reason I recommend it. This book is the best manual I've ever seen on the
techniques of what has been called "active listening." It is about
effective communication with anyone and everyone, regardless of age or
relationship. While there are other "effectiveness training" titles,
this particular book is the very best model of how to listen well, feed
back what you understand the other person to be saying and talk so the
other person will listen to you. It also helps you keep your cool
when dealing with difficult people. And despite its specific examples of
communicating with children, the reader will find that he/she has similar
conversations with adults -- especially in emotionally-challenging circumstances.
