Leadership: How to Prosper As a Leader
by Duncan Brodie

You are highly capable and have demonstrated time and time again that you can deliver. That is why you are now in a leadership role. So how can you prosper now that you are a leader?

Focus on the end game

Where do you want your organisation to be 1, 3, 5 or even 10 years from now? In other words what is the end game from your perspective? If you are to prosper as a leader it is vital that you focus on the end game. Why? It keeps your focus and attention on the big picture and avoids you getting sucked into the detail and maybe even going off course completely.

Surround yourself with great people

Leadership is challenging and can be a lonely place. No matter how good you are as an individual, you cannot do everything on your own. You need to have people around you who are great at what they do if you are to prosper. Recruit the best you can and ideally people with skills, knowledge and attributes that compliment yours.

Listen a lot

A lot of the training and teaching on communication is about writing and speaking. Yet as a leader it is equally important that you are an expert listener. When you listen you discover what is really going on and are open to new ideas and innovations that might just be the source of competitive advantage.

Make the tough calls

No one said that leading was easy. As a leader you are rewarded well for what you do and part of your role is to deal with the difficult stuff. The difficult stuff might include getting rid of someone who is not performing, outsourcing some functions to reduce cost or even closing part of the business. If you are to prosper as a leader you need to be willing to make those tough calls.

Continue to develop yourself

It is tempting to believe that when you have obtained a leadership role there is nothing else to learn. The reality is that you need to focus even more on developing yourself. Remember a leadership role brings many new and different challenges so give yourself every opportunity to succeed by continually developing yourself.

Bottom Line -- Prospering as a leader is probably your biggest career challenge to date. So what do you need to do in order to prosper as a leader?
