Best Job Search Advice: Your Resume Is NOT the Key!

Here's the best job search advice in one sentence: Your resume is NOT the key. Yes, I emphasized the word "not." If you have been waiting for your resume to help you get into job interviews, then you're wasting valuable time. The typical job seeker usually decides that they have to find the jobs that are available- - the ones listed on on job boards, in the newspaper, etc. This is a comfortable path to follow; it's one that we have tried over and over again. However, if you want to find a more direct path to a job interview, then your best bet is to uncover jobs that are unadvertised. Here are some quick steps to shake up your job search and get job interviews.
Step 1: Create a target list of companies. Where are your talents best suited? Decide which companies match your career interests and goals.
Step 2: Get as much information as you can about your targeted companies. Gather information about the companies' background details, company objectives, staffing needs, etc. Through use of the internet and your personal network, track down company information, press releases, events, financial details to get as much information as possible.
Step 3: Market yourself BEFORE sending your resume. If the company has advertised positions that match your background, contact the HR staff directly. Introduce yourself, briefly describe your qualifications, and start developing the initial relationship. Ask if it's possible to review the company hiring process with you, or ask if the position is still available for interviews. Ask for an email address to send your resume (especially if they requested online applications in the job posting). Even if there has not been an advertised position, you can follow the above steps.
Step 4: Identify hiring managers. Either through your network or your previous research, you may uncover the names of managers in your area of interest at each company. Can someone you know make an introductory call on your behalf? If so, wait for the introduction to be completed and then contact the hiring manager.
These four steps will help increase your chances of finding the right position at the right company .. without relying solely on your resume.
